How does equine cryotherapy work?

Acute inflammation is a process that helps tissues heal, but chronic inflammation can lead to systemic damage over time. Exposure to extreme cold causes a response in the body that results in a giant boost of circulation, reducing systemic inflammation. Suppressing heat and inflammation results in a wide range of benefits.
Get back to what you and your horse love doing sooner. Cryotherapy is a great tool for promoting recovery after a demanding competition, or supporting them during rigorous training. Cryotherapy reduces the levels of inflammatory proteins at injury sites, suppressing heat and allowing for faster tissue regeneration.

Cryotherapy has been shown to be an effective analgesic for a variety of conditions. Lowering tissue temperature acts as an analgesic by using extreme cold to constrict blood vessels, decreasing blood flow, reducing inflammation, and numbing nerves to slow pain signals.
The droopy lip says it all. Cryotherapy uses controlled cold to help calm the nervous system and support circulation, encouraging muscles to release and tension to fade. It’s basically a spa day—minus cucumbers, plus a horse who’s deeply relaxed and spiritually unavailable for drama.

Eileen is an enthusiastic lifelong "horse girl," and proud "adult ammy" who loves to learn. Her journey alongside a sensitive OTTB named Vinny led her down a path she couldn't have anticipated, which includes classical dressage, biomechanics, natural horsemanship, and alternative wellness practices. Herdwell is the result of that passion and the embodiment of her hopes for a better future for equines.

Kristen has worked with horses for more than 25 years, including seven years focused on natural and intuitive horsemanship. With a strong interest in equine biomechanics and behavioral training, she combines lifelong learning with hands-on experience to support horse wellness and performance. Kristen holds degrees in wildlife sciences and wildlife management, is a licensed associate wildlife biologist, and also works locally as a veterinary assistant alongside offering equine cryotherapy services through Herdwell. Kristen is also a certified pet end-of-life counselor and owner of At Peace, where she helps families navigate quality-of-life and end-of-life decisions for their pets with compassion and care.
